Being 13 has nothing to do with it…

tavi gevinson

The thing is, a lot of people make a big deal about Tavi Gevinson’s age. For me, it’s not that she’s in middle school that’s so annoying- it’s more the fact that she seems to have encyclopedic knowledge of the fashion world, she gets to interview designers at New York fashion week, she gets stuff from Miu Miu sent to her to use in her own personal photos shoots (which appear to be staged in the alley behind her house) and she pulls off a short bob with bangs better than Natalie Portman in The Professional (I never thought I’d see the day…)

When I say annoying, what I really mean is sweet. Sweet like a metal band, not like a Hello Kitty perfume…

Of course, for someone who has as much access and influence as she does, she manages to keep it pretty down to earth and not take things too seriously. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention she’s really witty…

Just take a look at one of her most recent posts on her blog stylerookie where she decided to re-imagine the new Lady Gaga and Beyonce video “Telephone.”

When I first saw this hyped up video I was like “Another song about a phone?!? You’ve got to be kidding me…” Some of you may remember the somewhat shorter and less catchy video for the song Videophone, the first colab between Gaga and B.

The “Telephone” video featured stale dialogue, blatant product placement for Virgin Mobile and that gross pussy wagon from Kill Bill. Blah. The only kind of cool part was the scene where Gaga uses soda cans as big-ass hair curlers. That was rad.

Anyways, blogs were meant to be shared with the world, that is their nature. Now you have one more to distract you while you are at work.

Halloween at Common Era

Halloween is just around the corner and if you don’t have a costume idea yet you’re going to regret it. What’s so great about Halloween is that you have an excuse to be creative and show another side of yourself. Often times that means dressing up as a sexier version of some more traditional character (witch, nurse, baseball player). But our favorite costumes are those that are more personalized- a person you look up to or admire or a scary character from your favorite horror movie. Even a character from a book can be a great costume- if people don’t understand right away they’ll be sure to ask you about it and then you find yourself having a conversation with someone you’ve never met before. It’s really a win-win.

Because of our roots as a vintage clothing store we were always a favorite choice when it came time to find a costume- from top hats to panty hoes, wigs, Elvis glasses, flapper skirts and capes of all sizes. While we have changed over the years to grow into a more far reaching but still unique new clothing store, our Halloween tradition continues to be a big part of who we are. In fact, the week leading up to Halloween all our employees are encouraged to dress up in a different costume every day!

Some of my past favorite costumes from the Common Era collection include Amy’s take on the “Queen of Hearts” from Alice in Wonderland and Katie’s take on “Natasha and Boris” from Rocky and Bullwinkle. So if you’ve been invited to a party and don’t have a thing to wear, come on down to Common Era where our creative staff will help you pick out the right costume for your event, whether it’s traditional, racy or something no one has even seen before. Happy Halloween from Common Era!

Bearded Lady

I don’t know what to tell you about this video except that in addition to working really hard, the Common Era girls sometimes need to kick back and have some laughs. In between customers, of course.
